Why does this site keep going offline?

It was down all day Sunday. Is it a matter of paying the server bill? I thought the little ads at the bottom were paying for that.

My guess is that either there are denial of service attacks, or the Amazon Server itself is having issues.

I don't think it's a matter of paying bills.

Here's the thread when it was switched to an Amazon Server.

Welcome to our new Amazon Server.

The forum is really slow today.

It sometimes takes 30 - 45 seconds after clicking on a thread, for it to load.

Usually, this is one of the fastest forums.

I am getting phishing attack and security errors and redirects when I go to the site lately.

I suspect this site is teetering on the verge of a google security red screen ban. Sounds like the security needs a patch in a hurry.

I saw this happen to another site I go to. They had to delete a bunch of system files and re-install fresh ones to clear whatevers been hacked, and then add some added security to prevent it from happening again.

I also got a red security alert.

It wasn't a ban, but it advised that this site was redirecting to some Hong Kong site.

I'm not going to tell DoubleTechnical to "get his shit together".  I know he's doing the best he can.  He's done a lot already, just to keep this place running for several years.

But I'm pointing out some warning signs, in terms of stability.

Same here. I got several security alerts. The site needs to be fixed or it might go down permanently.

It would be nice if DoubleTechnical could tell us what's going on.

It's ok if he needs some time to fix stuff, or patch stuff, etc.

It would just help us understand the situation.

No one is going to look down on this site, or his abilities to manage the site.  We love this place.

Problems with the security alert this morning too.  Site URL is getting hijacked by malicious code.  Yes it needs to be fixed.

On the other board I am on where this happened, it was a top level file on the server that had been hacked with some code with instructions for Google to re-direct. There, I think it was the index.php file. They solved it by deleting the file and replacing it with an older good copy of that same file. Then they patched some security issues and it was solved going forward. They then also had to inform Google (using some form) that the problem had been repaired so Google could re-index the site and verify the re-direct to the bad site was gone.

I see what's happening here.

A few days after resurrecting the "Chinese League Big Man Showdown" thread, this site was redirecting to a Hong Kong site.

Mainland China is hijacking ClipperTalk.com to so they can prevent NBA teams who were getting scouting info in here, from taking their foreign stars.

Not funny.  Still got the "red alert" today.  Plus the response time is slower than crap.  Must be denial of service attacks combined with the security problems Mistwell pointed out.  People are not going to come here with so many problems with the site.

Agree with these.

The response time has been bad since Friday I think.

I only saw the red alert once, a few days ago.

I'm not going anywhere.

This site has been down before.  In the middle of January 2014, this site was down for 3 weeks.

It came back.

If DoubleTechnical needs more time, I'll give him more time.  I'm not checking any other Clippers forums.

I will just paitiently wait.

Can someone be nominated to have DT's contact info for when this happens? I nominate Nuraman. Some very strange stuff going on that needs to be dealt with.

I second that Hitnrun24. Nuraman is a good choice. Maybe through Facebook or something? Or just an email address?

I have DoubleTechnical's email address. But I can't give an update to others unless he responds. Sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't. I do let him know as soon as I can.

I wouldn't mind it, but I have a feeling that he gets the emails I send, but doesn't always respond with updates.

I'm not sure a text when the site is down or having major stability errors, would produce a different response.

He has responded with updates in the past, a few times.  I've also sent an email before when there were major spambot attacks.

The one suggestion I have for DoubleTechnical, which I also mentioned in 2014, would be if he could send out a mass email to all registered users, or all registered users with at least 1 post, with some kind of an update.

Mass emails like that are available for admins in other forum software like vBulletin or XenForo, as well as other ones.

I'd like to think he can find a plug-in somewhere to integrate this into ClipperTalk.  For example, he did that for the Auto Save feature several years ago (but he removed it for various reasons later).

I think the users would like an update like "I know the site is down, but I am working on it, and it may be back in a few hours / days / etc.".

It's ok if it takes time to figure out a good solution.  It's better than being kept in the dark, or wondering if it's gone forever.

I'm sorry guys.

The Google ReCaptcha plugin I was using for registration became compromised and some scammers got into the server files and started modifying theme PHP files.

I wasn't comfortable trying to clean out all of the shit they had dumped on the old server, so I cleared ship and did a late night database migration to a fresh Linux Amazon EC2 a couple days ago.
The site's clean and back live.

Corkscrew sent me another hosting solution that I've heard good things about, I'm going to check them out. (Thank you!)

I may add back some minimal styling, but I do enjoy the clean vibe going on. The site was migrated to Bootstrap a couple years ago for just such an emergency. I wanted there to be bones that are built on an industy wide-framweork in case something went wrong in my sub-theme.

I'll work on getting an email blast together for future emergencies. That's a great idea!

PS. I would never let the site go forever. I heartCT

You're right.  The "karma" button is gone.

Maybe DoubleTechnical can find a clean solution to add it back.

A few other questions.

1)  Are you still going to make the year selector in the calender drop-down, when searching, to start from the past 10 years?

http://clippertalk.com/comment/139207#comment-139207

Or better yet, can you make it start from 2011 (the year this site was born), and go to the current year?

2)  Can you please add back the wink and facepalm emoticons?

If you don't want to, that's fine, but I'm not sure if you saw/remembered this request.

3)  What about the bug of how the person that starts a thread, can't edit any future posts in that thread that he makes?

How did you figure out that it was the ReCaptcha pluig-in that was compromised?

I'm having trouble pasting text or links.

Usually when I paste, I don't see anythin in the editor.

Only if I switch to plain text mode, can I see what I pasted.

But then I lose all formatting.

It's really frustrating not being able to paste using the normal editor.

I'm using I.E. at work, because I can't open threads in Chrome at work anymore, only the main forum page.

I'm also noticing on my work PC, that when I type from I.E., even if I'm typing at a reasonable speed, the text editor doesn't capture all of my keystrokes.

I'm not typing too fast.  I'm typing the same as I nomally do.

But every 3 - 5 keystrokes, it misses a key that I press.

It's happened constantly this week.

I can use other applications fine without the missed keystroke input problem.

Also, when I said I can't open threads in Chrome at work, the specific natue of the problem is this error:

As I said, I can load the main forum page in Chrome, just not any threads.

+++++++++++++
