West is weird. Very tight.  It's Houston, GSW, and everyone else. That 9 game losing streak will haunt us.

he Western Conference playoff desperation power rankings

https://www.thescore.com/s/4378446

This was always going to be a transition year for the Clippers, even before they traded Blake Griffin. Given the loss of Chris Paul, the roster turnover, the injuries they've suffered, all the lineup iterations (they've played 29 different starting fives!), just being in the race is a pretty staggering accomplishment. In the process, they've established a wacky, scrappy identity - the kind of unity they notably lacked during the Lob City era. The Griffin trade seemed like one they'd only win in the long run, but their roster is meshing just as well, if not better without him. Much like the Jazz, they are mostly playing without pressure or expectation.

That was brutal.  Kind of crazy that if we went 3-6 then we would be the 3rd seed.

Minny hung tough sans Towns/Butler/Teague with Utah till an inopportunely timed turnover from #8 down by five late pretty much sealed defeat. That game was kinda a win-win for the Clips regardless of the outcome. Some ten game schedules:

Utah - @ Sac (w), Orl (w), @ Ind (l), @ Mem (w), @ NO (w), Det (w), Pho (w), Sac (w), Atl (w), @ Dal (w) (could go 9-1, 8-2, or 7-3 at worst)

Minny - Bos (l), GS (l), @ Wash (l), @ SA (l), Hou (l), LAC (w), NY (w), Phi (l), Mem (w), Atl (w) (could go 3-7, 4-6, or 5-5 at best)

Spurs - LAL (w), Mem (w), @ GS (l), @ OKC (w), @ Hou (l), Orl (w), NO (w), Min (w), GS (l), Wash (l) (6-4, 7-3 at best)

Prediction for final standings based on some brief looking over of other schedules :

GS, Hou, Port, SA,  Den, Utah, NO, and either LAC, Min, or OKC. It's really a toss up between those three teams for the opportunity to play GS in the first round. Oh lordy.

That sucked.  9 games where Blake shot 36% and only 7 rebs/game, and Austin shot 33%.

rest of year for #8 seed:

OKC- @ Port (l), Hou (l), Pho (w), SA (l), Sac (w), @ Atl (w), LAC (w), @ Tor (l), @ Bos (l), Mia (w), Port (l), @ SA (l), Den (w), @ No (l), GS (l), @ Hou (l) @ Mia (w), Mem (w)  45-37

Minny- Bos (l), GS (l), @ Wash (l), @ SA (l), Hou (l), LAC (w), NY (w), Phi (l), Mem (w), Atl (w) , @ Dal (w), Uta (l), @ Den (l), @ LAL (w), @ Mem (w), Den (l) 45-37

LAC- Bkn (w), NO (w), Cle (l), Orl (w), @ Chi (w), @ Hou (l), @ Okc (l), Port (l), @ min (l), @ Mil (l), @ Ind (w), @ Tor (l), @ pho (w), @ Port (l), Ind (w), SA (l), @ Utah (l), Den (w), NO (w), LAL (w) 43-39

Clips probably out. Would wager OKC in at #8.

the whole Bradley/Gallo/Wallace issues have really hampered the potential. If those guys weree around could see a few more wins to reach the #7 or #8 spot. It's just difficult to see the Clips making it right now.

In better news, I'm going to go for a desert hike and get off the computer. Yay.

You can thank Doc and Austin for why we're stuck in 9th place. I'm still not over Austin choking that Miami game away.

there are always a few quirky, unexpected losses and just think they may be one of them. Nothing is written in stone w any of this, but I’m educated guessing that’s the way the seeding will end up. OKC vs GS good for tv ratings too...baldy commish’s first round wet dream.

hope wrong though of course. And I don’t know if one can call @Min a potential unexpected loss. Teague embarassed Milos last time, Towns is a top 10 player, Wiggins playing much better, and have a decent coach. Both teams will be hungry for it, mad fer it...going to be some juicy bball league-wide down the stretch. Watched more this week than anytime all year.

It will be interesting to see if Minny hangs on, if the Butler injury happened a little sooner I think they'd have fallen out but they'll probably barely hang on. If all the schedules were equal I would expect us to get in and maybe jump to a 4 or 5 seed, but we do have it a lot tougher than some of the others with injuries to boot. Denver and Utah are probably the 2 teams that are the worst of the bunch and I don't see them threatening anyone in the playoffs.

It's going to sting if the Cavs can't come back and beat Denver (currently down 5 in the 4th). Maybe they should have traded for DJ instead of the half measures they took. As far as our pick, Blake is earning his pay check tonight through 3 quarters but Miami up 7. Hopefully they hold on.

Spurs are 2-8 in their last 10, with Kawhi possibly out for season. Wheels may be falling off there. We are only 1 game behind them in the loss column.

It's going to be tough for us with Gallo out. Spurs and Minnesota might lose a lot of games coming up though.

The Clippers do control their own destiny. They basically need to at least stay on pace with Denver in order to make the playoffs. Outside of Minny and the Spurs, every team from 3rd down to even the Lakers are looking really good with no sign of letting up. I've never seen this kind of crap shoot before.

Davis Bertans got blocked by Durant on a dunk attempt, then totally facialed by McGee in the first quarter. Talk about mental exhaustion. He's 1-3 with a couple boards and an assist right now, but can't really see his night getting a whole lot better with that mind thrashing. We'll see, he is eastern european so may not even know the significance of it all.

Spurs @ OKC (-4.5) tonight . Thought SA was a lock, but now it's really borderline. They could have anywhere from 44 wins to 40 wins.

@OKC (l), @ HOU (l), ORL (w), NO (w), Minn (w), GS (l), Wash (l), @Utah (l), @ Mil (l), @ Wash (l), OKC (w), HOU (l), @LAC (l), @LAL (l), Port (l), Sac (w), @ NO (l)

42-40?

43/44 wins should get you in the dance. 42 probably out.

Utah coming back and now down by three at halftime in NO. If Pels lose it'll just be more of a cluster in the lower seeds. And then you'd kinda want to annoit Portland at #3, but then you look at their tough schedule coming up.

Madness indeed.

Really bad timing on that Curry injury, although they should still be able to win with what they have left. There's no question their depth is not what it was though.

So the Spurs now have the same number of losses as we do. And if the Pelicns lose one more, they will have the same number as well.

Nuggets and Jazz only have one more loss.

The west could have SEVEN TEAMS with the identical record this year at this rate. I mean, that won't happen. Someone will lose more, someone will win more. But right now. looking at the standings, you could see seven teams with identical records. It could go "Top 3 teams" then "7 teams with identical good records" then "bottom 5 teams" in the west. Two teams will likely miss the playoffs after having won enough to have made it into the playoffs in most years. Also, the 8th seed is likely slightly more desirable than the 7th seed at the moment with the Rockets at #1 right now. And the 5th and 6th seeds are about as desirable as the 3rd and 4th seeds at the moment.

Hold on to your seatbelts folks! We may need to start paying attention to tie breakers.

9 of the top 11 teams in the West have won at least 6 of their last 10 games. Definitely not a tankathon for the teams that think they can get to the playoffs.

I'm surprised the Lakers are playing so well given how far out they are. They must be trying to show off for free agents.

I know we clinched tie breaker over Denver.

Have to check on the others......

Tie breaker TBD:

NOP 1-2, 1 game remaining (home game) conf record 20-20 (clippers conf record 22-19)
UTA 1-2, 1 game remaining (road game) conf record 24-16 (clippers conf record 22-19)

Win tie breaker:

DEN

Lose tie breaker:

MIN, OKC, SAS

We have a good shot to get the tie breaker over NOP since our remaining game with them is at home and we have a better conference record at this point.

We have an outside shot at the Utah tie breaker but they are in the drivers seat right now on conference record and our last head to head with them is on their home floor.

Here are the remaining schedules and how I would rank them from easiest to toughest:

UTA

Games vs. teams over .500: 7
Road Games: 6
Home Games: 9

MIN

Games vs. teams over .500: 8
Road Games: 7
Home Games: 7

NOP

Games vs. teams over .500: 11
Road Games: 6
Home Games: 10

OKC

Games vs. teams over .500: 11
Road Games: 7
Home Games: 7

SAS

Games vs. teams over .500: 13
Road Games: 6
Home Games: 10

DEN

Games vs. teams over .500: 11
Road Games: 10
Home Games: 5

LAC

Games vs. teams over .500: 14
Road Games: 10
Home Games: 7

We have a decent shot to hang with or finish ahead of Denver because we own the tie breaker and their remaining schedule is almost as tough as ours. But just finishing ahead of Denver isn't going to get us a playoff spot, we have to finish ahead of one more team as well and that is gonna be tough looking at the schedules.

I think our best shot to catch another team may be the Spurs. They are 2-8 in their last 10 and they have a pretty tough schedule not so much on home/road splits, but on opponent record. Of course if they get Kawhi back, that could all go out the window.

I think we most likely end up at the 9 spot. Finishing ahead of Denver but losing out on a playoff spot, possibly on a tie breaker or by 1-2 games. Remaining schedule is just too tough and we don't own enough tie breakers.

We have a chance this week to find out if we should be in the playoffs.  Beat Houston or OKC on their home courts and we belong.  If they blow us out then we don't belong and should settle for ninth or tenth.  No point in getting to the playoffs if we have no chance of winning or being competitive.  Thanks for posting the home and away.  If Spurs don't improve they will be the other team out along with us.  Denver is not that good either.  Lakers are looking to kill them tomorrow night for showing them up at Denver.  But the Nuggets do have Milsap back which should help them a lot.  Any team could take a quick dive in the standings.  But looking at the schedule the team most likely to do that is us.

They won't be as good without Butler, but their schedule is on the easier side and they own the tie breaker over us, so it's gonna be tough for us to catch them and pass them.

Whoopie-fucking-doo! OKC is in the 4th seed and they are not safe. They still need to get past The Clippers, Toronto, Boston, Portland, San Antonio, Denver, New Orleans, Golden State, and Houston.

It's going to be a very bumpy ride to the finish for everyone.
