Sacramento Kings to become Anaheim Royals (again)

Breaking news is that the Maloofs STILL want to move the team to Anaheim, despite the new arena deal in Sacramento.

The Maloofs are jackasses.

They have no money. They want to find a sucker city that will give them a bunch of cash.

Basically, any deal that makes them pay ANYTHING is a deal that they aren't interested in.

So the Maloofs will go to Anaheim and see if they'll get them to fork over a bunch of tax payer dollars that would otherwise go towards important things like education, helping the poor, parks, etc. They just agreed to this "non binding" deal so they could avoid getting booed at home games this season.

What a racket. Fuck those guys. I hope they're forced to sell the team like Shinn was, but they probably won't be. It doesn't seem like the league is particularly interested in having a team in Sacramento, as they were with New Orleans.

So now it's no drive to see an away game at the Lakers, and only a short drive to see an away game in Anaheim? Man, that's a lot of non-away-away games.

how can  you blame the maloof??? if i were them, i would try to move to anaheim in every possible way. it will attract free agents, it will land them a huge billion dollars tv contract .the fans are wealthy, all will come from san diego and the inland empire. it's near the beach, disneyland, seaworld, legoland, and san diego zoo. it's a no brainer to move to the honda center, which they are renovating to make it more upscale. the only 2 things that are stopping them are jerry buss and donald sterling. I hope they are approve to move to the honda center. there's more nba to follow and watch on tv.....

The Maloofs could have attracted the same FAs in Sacramento if they'd spend the money.  They had the cap space.  Instead, they try for JJ Barea and Chuck Hayes.

Once upon a time, they got Vlade Divac, and did a sign-and-trade for Brad Miller.  All-Star caliber players.  Now, they're overpaying for semi-starters.

They could have had David West or Kris Humphries easily last year, with their cap space.

Also, the deal with Anaheim was terrible for the Maloofs financially too.  They would have taken a significant loan from Henry Samueli.  They probably would have had to mow his lawn too.  It was not a good financial deal for them, other than the potential TV contract.  But Fox Sports now has the Dodgers and Clippers.  I don't think they have much money for the Anaheim Royals.

The House DJ is playing the Foo Fighters "There Goes My Hero" as Joe and Gavin are introduced. I don't need to point out what's wrong with this picture.

Agree trapp76, you don't make an announcement in Orlando, whether it's a deal, or a "framework for a deal", and then get introduced like rock stars at the next home game, and then find problems with the deal at the end of the season.

They're just jerking the fans around.

And the deal with Henry Samueli last year wasn't even that good.  They would have taken a significant loan from him, and probably had to change Samueli's grandkids' diapers.

The only good thing was the TV deal, and with the money Fox Sports is forking over for the Dodgers and Clippers, there's only so much left for the Anaheim Royals IMO.

Shinn wasn't forced to sell though, he had wanted to sell on his own, tried selling on his own, then the NBA bought him out.  Unless the Maloofs can't make payroll, like the Dodgers, the board of governors can't make the Maloofs sell.

With that said, I don't see how the other owners can approve of a relocation either.  There's been so much momentum towards building a new arena, and at this point, all of the other financials are in place except for the Maloofs commitment.  All of the other owners could hope at some point to get a similar public-private partnership deal with their respective teams', in the future.

Because all of the other details for an arena have been worked out, and the city wants to build a new arena, then I don't think they can approve of a move.  It's not like Seattle, where they didn't want a new arena as much.

There's a lot of press conferences from yesterday, but here's George Maloofs:

Look at the Samueli deal from last year, it was a terrible business move.

Here was the Samueli deal last year.  It was terrible, don't see why the Maloofs would want that.

So, the Maloofs will go from wanting to control everything in Sacramento to virtually being tenants if the venue contract details released by Anaheim officials Friday are any indication.

++++++++++++++

Chief among them: The Maloofs would control only 50 percent of parking revenue and only 50 percent of food and beverage revenue generated for NBA games.

The Maloofs would not control the Honda Center naming rights. Should Sameuli extend his naming rights deal with Honda or makes another deal, Samueli alone sets the terms.

Under any new naming rights deal, the Maloofs would be entitled to only a third of the money.

The Maloofs would get 100 percent of NBA-related advertising inside Honda Center. But they would get only a third of every other form of arena advertising.

They would get 92 percent of ticket sales from NBA games but share in no revenue from NHL games, concerts or any other events at Honda Center.

Samueli also controls the arena's luxury suites.

Another reason why the Samueli deal was bad, was because it was contingent on a $100M loan from Samueli to the Maloofs.  But if the Maloofs missed a payment, then Samueli would have had control of the team.

It was the equivalent of 1-800-LOANMART.  You miss a loan payment, they take your car.

Maloofs miss a loan payment, then Samueli would take part-ownership.

Plus the areana might kill the city of Sacramento in the long run. $391 million to build the arena, and in reality the cost might jump to  almost $500million... which could mean Sacramento citizens will have to cough up some tax money. The Maloofs are scum but Kevin Johnson and company were rushing things and if sh*t hit the fan a couple of years later KJ more than likely won't even be mayor and can ride off in the sunset free and clear while Sac becomes the next Stockton(bankrupt). I think the problem is they want the arena downtown to jumpstart a LA Live type venture but really it would've been easier to build it next to where Arco is standing at right now.

I grew up in Fresno, and even though Fresno and Sac don't really like each other, it would be bad if the only pro team in the Central Valley left. We need a NFL team here before another NBA team.
